The approximately 40,000 people who call Castle Rock home treasure its historic downtown, charming small-town ambiance, and plentiful parks and open space, not to mention breath-taking views of the Front Range mountains, clean air, and low crime rate.

A prime location at 6,202 feet in the East Plum Creek Valley near I-25 places Castle Rock, named for the most prominent of several spectacular buttes that overlook the town, at the halfway point between Denver and Colorado Springs.

First settled in the 1870s, Castle Rock soon became a center for rhyolite mining and key railway stop. The presence of pinkish rhyolite, a hard volcanic rock, atop the buttes explains why they haven't been worn away by erosion.

Now the seat of Douglas County, among the most popular and fastest growing counties in the country, Castle Rock was incorporated in 1881. The original train depot is now a fascinating repository for local and regional history.

Castle Rock offers every shopping experience imaginable. The lively downtown district boasts several historic buildings, a variety intriguing boutiques, and more than 40 restaurants to satisfy every taste whether for a fine gourmet meal, snack on the run, or a hopping brew pub.

Crowfoot Valley Coffee, locally owned and operated, is a popular gathering spot where locals exchange news of the day, while the perennially popular Outlets at Castle Rock, featuring well over 100 leading retail stores, draws bargain hunters from near and far.

Recreational enthusiasts will revel in the area's more than 16 miles of trails, 1500 acres of open space, and seven landscaped parks offering tennis courts, outdoor pools, sports fields, and playgrounds.

Hiking and wildlife programs can be found at nearby Castlewood Canyon State Park and Hidden Mesa open space. Popular new home communities in the area include the nationally recognized Castle Pines Village, the Meadows, Castlewood Ranch, Plum Creek, Buffalo Ridge, Spirit Ridge, and Woodlands. Diamond Head, featuring two-story, ranch, and patio-home designs is clustered about the award-winning Plum Creek Golf Course and Country Club.

Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course, designed by Jim Engh, garners rave reviews for its rolling terrain, lush bluegrass fairways, dramatic vistas, extreme changes in elevation, and frequent sightings of wildlife. Five sets of tees, strategically placed bunkers, and green-side lakes challenge golfers of all skill levels.
